Douche-a-Rama

You're a douchebag, I'm a douchebag, and everyone else is a douchebag, too. Except that we should really stop calling each other that, as the word is so overused that it has lost any meaning or cachet it once had. Lately, though, it seems that denouncing the word for being overused has become a relatively douchebag-y thing to do, too. The circle of douche continues.

Media

They're (Not) Lovin' It

This week, the New York Times reported on a seemingly new idea in advertising—news product placement. No, we don't mean placing positive coverage of products into news reports (though, who knows, that could be next), we mean having reporters consume a particular product on air. For instance, anchors on Fox morning news shows in several cities—including Chicago, Las Vegas, and Seattle—are being shown with cups of McDonald's coffee clearly placed in front of them.

Media

The Future of the Chicago Tribune?

Among the proposals for the Chicago Tribune's planned redesign, which we criticized on Monday, is turning the sports section into a tabloid. When we read "tabloid" we thought "not broadsheet" and, perhaps, "shitty reporting." As you probably could tell, we didn't like the idea. But it turns out that going tabloid may not be the only unseemly part of the Trib sports section's future.

Politics

Dropping The Jägerbomb

The eons-long feud that has simmered between Staten Island and the Jersey Shore boiled over last week after a few ill-conceived remarks from a public official garnered coverage up and down the Jersey and New York shorelines. For those who find themselves in the good fortune to reside in areas where this story does not exist, here's a brief recap of the major events.

Media

The Death of the Chicago Tribune?

The Chicago Reader, the Second City's alternative weekly, recently selected the Chicago Tribune as the city's "best news source" for 2008. But apparently the media empire spawned by the paper's success—the troubled Tribune Company—doesn't see things that way. Or perhaps Sam Zell just doesn't care.

Media

Jesse's Other N-Word

By now, pretty much the entire country knows what Jesse Jackson would like to do to Barack Obama's nuts. But the Associated Press reported reports that Jackson used a far more provocative n-word in that same off-air conversation. (Of course, it did not print the actual word "nigger."). Maybe it's time to rename that South Park episode something other than "With apologies to Jesse Jackson."

Media

Outsourcing Bad Beer

Once again, jingoism and the flailing economy collide. The most prolific and steadily unappetizing macrobrew distiller in America, Anheuser-Busch, has agreed to a $52 billion takeover offer from Belgian-based, Brazilian-operated InBev this week, thus adding itself to the list of things-available-to-but-no-longer-of America. Think tech support, celebrity childbirth, and Madonna.

Media

Robin Hood in Reverse

TMZ, the celebrity gossip blog, has been copying stories from Courthouse News Service and passing them off as TMZ exclusives. This is disgusting, but not surprising—TMZ is not exactly known to be a paragon of journalistic ethics. Somewhat more disturbing, however, is that TMZ is owned by Time Warner, publisher of such venerable magazines as Time and Sports Illustrated.

Media

Threatdown Dictionary

The economy is tanking, oil prices are soaring, and nearly all indicators show things are going to get worse before they get better. With so much to worry about, how will Americans keep track of all our various threats and concerns? Luckily, the press and cable news folks have devised clever alliterative mnemonics to help us out. Below, Gelf presents the Threat Down dictionary.

Media

Rupert Murdoch: Hipster?

Gawker recently noted a new sort-of predilection amongst the super-rich—including Bruce Wasserstein, Rupert Murdoch, and George Soros—for young Asian women. While this could well be, well, nothing, Gelf couldn't help but notice that a nominally anti-corporate group always seemed to have an Asian fetish: white hipsters.
