December 9: Immersion Journalism

Media Circus returns in December with journalists who have burrowed deep into their stories and written up the tale. Join Gelf and noted writers Ted Conover, whose works Rolling Nowhere: Riding the Rails with America's Hoboes and Newjack: Guarding Sing Sing are synonymous with immersionism; Brooke Kroeger, the director of the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute at NYU whose database on the history of immersion reporting goes back over a century; and Avi Steinberg, author of Running the Books about his time spent working as a prison librarian.

Gelf's Varsity Letters sports reading series returns on Thursday, December 2, at 7:30 p.m. At this monthly event in DUMBO, Brooklyn, hosted by Gelf and Jan Larsen Art, Roger Bennett and Andrew Zimbalist will read from and talk about their work. Bennett will deliver a paean to ping pong, with tales from the table. And Zimbalist will score the winners and losers in sports economics.

November 4: Varsity Letters

Gelf's Varsity Letters sports reading series returns on Thursday, November 4, at 7 p.m. At this monthly event in DUMBO, Brooklyn, hosted by Gelf and Jan Larsen Art, Tommy Craggs, Dave Jamieson, and Howard Bryant will read from and talk about their work. Craggs will discuss his work at Deadspin, and how the media abuses Hank Aaron's legacy. Jamieson will track the rise and fall of the baseball-card industry. And Bryant will discuss his biography of Aaron.

Gelf's Varsity Letters sports reading series returns on Thursday, October 7, at 7:30 p.m. At this monthly event in DUMBO, Brooklyn, hosted by Gelf and Jan Larsen Art, Alex Belth, Jay Jennings, and Matthew Shepatin will read from and talk about their work. Belth will share his favorite sportswriters' favorite memories of the late, lamented Yankee Stadium; Jennings will recount the tale of an integrated high-school football team playing in the shadow of segregationist history; and Shepatin will tell the unlikely story of Don Maynard, the former Jets great.

September 30: The Non-Motivational Speaker Series Returns

The Non-Motivational Speaker Series returns to Brooklyn on Thursday, September 23, at 7:30 p.m to dissect the best in bad (and baaad) film. A corps of experts—all of whom have forfeited not a small part of their lives in service of the ultimate chuckle—will present their conclusions.

Geeking Out

September 16th: The Anatomy of the Big Apple

On Thursday, September 16th, we'll be hosting a very special Geeking Out devoted to the inner workings of New York City. The evening will feature Benjamin Kabak , author of popular subway blog Second Avenue Sagas discussing the MTA; Sharon Zukin, author of Naked City: The Death and Life of Authentic Urban Places, on gentrification; and Charles Komanoff, creator of the Balanced Transportation Analyzer, discussing how to optimize the city's transportation network. Gelf's Varsity Letters sports reading series returns on Thursday, September 2, at 7:30 p.m. At this monthly event in DUMBO, Brooklyn, hosted by Gelf and Jan Larsen Art, Dan Epstein, Michael Weinreb, Dave Zirin will read from and talk about their work. Epstein will revisit the quirks and fun of 1970s baseball. Weinreb traces the roots of the modern athlete to the 1980s, his formative years as a sports fan. And Zirin will decry the owners who ruin sports.

Media Circus, July 29: The Year in Hyperlocal

Just over a year ago, Gelf hosted a contentious and illuminating discussion about the business of hyperlocal. (Video of the panel discussion is available here.) Now, last year's nascent offerings have become this year's major players, and the hyperlocal space has been characterized by a rash of investments, if not profits. Join Gelf for a frank discussion of the pitfalls and prospects of hyperlocal, as we once again view the past and future growth of the field through the eyes of the people who are driving it.

Gelf's Varsity Letters sports reading series returns on Thursday, August 5, at 7:30 p.m. At this free monthly event in DUMBO, Brooklyn, hosted by Gelf and Jan Larsen Art, Beth Raymer, Paul Solotaroff, and Joseph E. Wallace will read from and talk about their work. Raymer will recount her experience as a girl Friday for a Vegas sports-gambling operator. Solotaroff will describe his steroids-fueled, bodybuilding youth. And Wallace will read from his novel inspired by Jackie Mitchell, the 17-year-old woman who struck out Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig in 1931.

Gelf's Varsity Letters sports reading series returns on Thursday, July 1, at 7:30 p.m. At this free monthly event in DUMBO, Brooklyn, hosted by Gelf and Jan Larsen Art, Mark Hyman, Elias Altman, and Will Leitch will read from and talk about their work. Hyman will examine youth sports and their dangers. Altman will bring stories from the latest, sports-themed issue of Lapham's Quarterly. And Leitch will discuss father-son relationships around baseball.
