Join Gelf and other Big Apple gastronomes in a discussion of food criticism and the encroaching influence of blogs when Media Circus returns to the Brooklyn waterfront on June 17. Robert Sietsema, longtime restaurant critic for the Village Voice and contributor to the erstwhile Gourmet; Alexandra Vallis, editor of NBC's new food blog, Feast; and Josh Ozersky, James Beard Award–winning food writer and the author of The Hamburger: A History, will cut up and digest food writing in the world's hungriest city.
Gelf's Varsity Letters sports reading series returns on Thursday, June 3, at 7:30 p.m. At this free monthly event in DUMBO, Brooklyn, hosted by Gelf and Jan Larsen Art, Rafe Bartholomew, Steven D. Stark, Harrison Stark, and Matthew Stevenson will read from and talk about their work. Bartholomew will relate his observations from his year in basketball-mad Philippines. The Starks, a father-and-son writing team, will preview the upcoming World Cupboth in terms of soccer and for its broader geopolitical implications. And Stevenson will share some of the highlights of more than a century of sportswriting in Harper's.
The Non-Motivational Speaker Series re-ups on Thursday, May 27th to deconstruct The Wire. Speakers include philosophy professor Harvey Cormier, author of the paper "Bringing Omar Back to Life," and Stephen Janis, former crime beat reporter at the Baltimore Examiner and current senior reporter at Investigate Voice, a muckracking news outfit in Baltimore.

On Thursday, May 20th, we'll be hosting our grossest Geeking Out yet in DUMBO. The night will feature Gene Kaplan, author of the parasite-riddled new book, What's Eating You? and Louis Sorkin, a bedbug expert at the American Museum of Natural History. Admission is FREE. Drinks (both alcoholic and otherwise) will be available. Please spread the word and bring your friends.
Gelf's Varsity Letters sports reading series returns on Thursday, May 6, at 7:30 p.m. At this free monthly event in DUMBO, Brooklyn, hosted by Gelf and Jan Larsen Art, Binnie Klein, Kathy Orton, and Danny Peary will read from and talk about their work. Klein will describe her unlikely midlife transformation through boxing. Orton will chronicle the unsung hoopsters of the Ivy League, including this March's surprise success from Cornell. And Peary will chronicle the life of former home-run champ Roger Maris.
The internet is a behemoth of billions of pages of information. The only way we (and Google) can hope to make sense of it is to rely on creator-provided information like tags and keywords, which tell readers and bots what the pages are all about. A recent scan through the tags on Hulu's Biggest Loser show, though, indicates that we may not be quite as far along in the refinement of the process as we thought.
This event has been rescheduled for later date. Media Circus will return on May 20 with a night devoted to food critics.

Lowenfish will chronicle the history of baseball's labor wars. McDougall explains his theory that mankind was born to run ultramarathons. And Span will report from the edge of baseball fandom.
