Feb. 26: Going Downhill

Varsity Letters returns to the Gallery at LPR with a look at all things alpine. New York Daily News reporter Nathaniel Vinton will read from and discuss his new book The Fall Line: How American Ski Racers Conquered a Sport on the Edge. He'll be joined by former ski racer and current freelance journalist Amanda Ruggeri, as well as Nick Paumgarten, a staff writer at The New Yorker who has written extensively about skiing.

Tuesday, Jan. 13: Best American Sportswriting 2014

Gelf returns to The Gallery at Le Poisson Rouge on Tuesday, January 13 with a look at 2014's best sportswriting. Glenn Stout, longform editor at SB Nation, and editor of the Best American Sportswriting series, will discuss last year's collection. He'll be joined by contributors to the edition, New York Times reporter Jonathan Mahler and Mary Pilon, author of the forthcoming book, The Monopolists: Obsession, Fury, and the Scandal Behind the World's Favorite Board Game.

Nov. 13: Sports Science

Varsity Letters returns to The Gallery at Le Poisson Rouge on Thursday, November 13, with a look at modern sports science. Wired.com editor Mark McClusky will discuss his new book Faster, Higher, Stronger: How Sports Science Is Creating a New Generation of Superathletes--and What We Can Learn from Them. He'll be joined by ESPN's Pablo S. Torre, who will talk about biometrics and the NBA.

MONDAY Oct. 6: Hockey Stories

This month only, Varsity Letters moves to Monday at The Gallery at Le Poisson Rouge with a night of stories from the world of hockey. New York Times reporter John Branch will read from his book Boy on Ice: The Life and Death of Derek Boogaard. Author Howard Shapiro will talk about his graphic novel The Hockey Saint. The event will be guest hosted by Puck Daddy blogger Greg Wyshynski.

Sept. 11: Football Through the Ages

Varsity Letters returns to The Gallery at LPR on Thursday, September 11 for a night that looks at football from its earliest days to the modern era. Dave Revsine, lead studio host of the Big Ten Network, will be reading from and discussing his book The Opening Kickoff: The Tumultuous Birth of a Football Nation. He'll be joined by writers Alex Belth, Paul Solotaroff, and Peter Richmond as they discuss and read from the new collection from the Library of America, Football: Great Writing About the National Sport, edited by John Schulian.

August 14: Blood Sport's Gus Garcia-Roberts and Celebrating Sports on Earth

Varsity Letters returns to The Gallery at LPR on Thursday, August 14. Newsday's Gus Garcia-Roberts, the co-author of Blood Sport: Alex Rodriguez, Biogenesis, and the Quest to End Baseball's Steroid Era, will discuss the ongoing Biogenesis scandal. He'll be joined by former staff members of the recently scaled-back website Sports on Earth—including editor Larry Burke and writer Tomas Rios—as they celebrate some of the fine work the publication produced.

July 10: Dave Zirin and Roland Lazenby

Varsity Letters returns to the The Gallery at LPR on Thursday, July 10 with authors Dave Zirin and Roland Lazenby. In Zirin's record-setting sixth Varsity Letters appearance, the sports columnist for The Nation will be discussing his trip to Brazil during the World Cup and his new book, Brazil's Dance with the Devil: The World Cup, The Olympics, and the Fight for Democracy. He'll be joined by Roland Lazenby, a columnist for HoopsHype.com and the author of the recently-released biography Michael Jordan: The Life.

June 12: Poker Night at Varsity Letters

Thursday night is poker night at Varsity Letters. Eric Raskin, editor-in-chief of All In magazine and author of The Moneymaker Effect: The Inside Story of the Tournament That Forever Changed Poker; will be joined by author Peter Alson, fresh off his trip to the World Series of Poker.

May 15: World Cup Varsity Letters

The World Cup is rapidly approaching, and now's your chance to show everyone that you were into soccer before it was cool when Varsity Letters returns to The Gallery at LPR on Thursday, May 15. Howler and Sports Illustrated contributor Alexander Abnos will be joined by Graham Parker of The Guardian and Grantland, as well as MLSsoccer.com editor-in-chief Greg Lalas, in a discussion of all aspects of The Beautiful Game.

April 10: Charlie Hustle, a Former Mr. Met, and the Ill-Fated Expos

Thursday, April 10 is baseball night at Varsity Letters at The Gallery at LPR. Grantland's Jonah Keri, a two-time Varsity Letters veteran, will read from his new book Up, Up, and Away: The Kid, the Hawk, Rock, Vladi, Pedro, le Grand Orange, Youppi!, the Crazy Business of Baseball, and the Ill-fated but Unforgettable Montreal Expos. He'll be joined by Kostya Kennedy of Sports Illustrated, author of Pete Rose: An American Dilemma; and a former Mr. Met, AJ Mass, author of Yes, It's Hot in Here: Adventures in the Weird, Woolly World of Sports Mascots.
