Gelf's Varsity Letters sports reading series returns on Thursday, November 5, at 7:30 p.m. At this free monthly event in DUMBO, Brooklyn, hosted by Gelf and Jan Larsen Art, Shawn Boburg, Jeff Leen, and Tony Leonardo, will read from and talk about their work, and take questions. Boburg will offer a glimpse into the past and inside the mind of mercurial Dodgers star Manny Ramirez; Leen will relate the colorful history of women's wrestling champion and pioneer Mildred Burke; and Leonardo will expound on the oddball culture of ultimate frisbee.

Gelf's Varsity Letters sports reading series returns with an all-baseball night on Thursday, October 1, at 7:30 p.m, a week before the season kicks off. At this free monthly event in DUMBO, Brooklyn, hosted by Gelf and Jan Larsen Art, Joe Posnanski, Jennifer Ring, and Larry Tye will read from and talk about their work, and take questions. Posnanski will relate the history of the Big Red Machine, perhaps the greatest lineup ever; Ring will explain the shameful history of baseball closing itself off to girls at a young age; and Tye will describe the colorful and groundbreaking life of Satchel Paige. Plus, Jonathan Hock will present scenes from his film The Lost Son of Havana.

Media Circus is back in Brooklyn on September 10 with the panel discussion "Overlooked: Women in Media" at JLA Studios in DUMBO at 7:30 PM. The panel will be guest hosted by Mediaite's Rachel Sklar, and will include Glynnis MacNicol, also of Mediaite, CNET writer Caroline McCarthy, Jessica Grose of Slate's XX Factor, and Anna Holmes, founder and editor of Jezebel. The event will focus on some of the less obvious challenges facing women in media today.

Fatsis will return to, and update, his tale of seeking to become a pro placekicker; Shepatin will relate some of the best NFL stories ever told; and Tunison will preach from his manifesto for football fans.
