While many in the presumably fake America celebrated the election of card-carrying fake American Barack Obama this week, it was a bittersweet victory for supporters of California's gay community. That blue state, which went for Obama by a huge margin, also passed Proposition 8, which added to the state constitution the line, "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid and recognized in California." California's somewhat schizophrenic electorate led to some rather amusing turns of phrase by reporters and headline writers:
The Economist (regarding May's court ruling): "Happy gays are here again."
Just Out: California Protects Animals, Screws Gays
Brad Altman, partner of Star Trek actor George Takei: "Our relationship will continue and we will live long and prosper no matter what happens on the legal front."
The winner, though, is Time's John Cloud, who may have gotten a little carried away with his use of metaphor: "The money the gay side raised is surprising for two reasons: first, the cash-Hoover known as the Obama campaign was sucking down millions of dollars a day from the nation's liberals."
