Feb. 22: Fix the Knicks

Varsity Letters returns to The Gallery at Le Poisson Rouge on Wednesday, February 22, with a night that looks at the sorry state of New York Knicks basketball. Senior NBA writer at Bleacher Report Howard Beck will be joined by longtime New York Times writer and author of When the Garden Was Eden Harvey Araton, and Vocativ sports writer Robert Silverman. Along with moderator Yaron Weitzman, Knicks beat reporter at Bleacher Report, the panel will look at whether the Charles Oakley incident represents rock bottom for the franchise and what the lead singer of JD & the Straight Shot could possibly do to Fix the Knicks.

January 9: A History of Sports

Varsity Letters returns to The Gallery at Le Poisson Rouge on Monday, January 9th with a night that looks at the big picture of sports. Gary Belsky and Neil Fine will be reading from and discussing their New York Times bestseller On the Origins of Sports: The Early History and Original Rules of Everybody’s Favorite Games. Belsky and Fine served as the editor in chief and executive editor, respectively, of ESPN The Magazine, and are the founding partners of the editorial consulting firm Elland Road Partners. They'll be joined by Cait Murphy, an editor at McKinsey & Company, and author of A History of American Sports in 100 Objects.

Nov. 29: Varsity Letters Goes To The Theater

Join Gelf for a night at the theater. Gelf readers save $10 on tickets to the tennis-themed play Don't You F**king Say a Word on Tuesday, November 29, in Manhattan. The performance will be followed by a panel discussion of sports and rage, featuring Patrick McEnroe.

Nov. 7: A New Hockey Magazine

Nov. 7: A New Hockey Magazine On Monday, November 7, Varsity Letters returns to The Gallery at Le Poisson Rouge with the team behind Barn Magazine—a soon-to-be-launched hockey quarterly. Peter Axtman, the magazine's founder and editor-in-chief, has contributed to RunnersWorld.com, Vice Sports, SB Nation and the Red Hook Star-Revue. He'll be joined by Barn contributors Patrick Kearns, Saqib Rahim, and Joe Kozlowski. Barn Magazine is currently raising funds to complete its first issue on Kickstarter.

Oct. 17: Shaun Assael, Matthew Futterman, and S.L. Price

Gelf returns to The Gallery at Le Poisson Rouge with a night of books about boxing, sports business, and small-town football. The guest authors are ESPN the Magazine senior writer Shaun Assael, author of The Murder of Sonny Liston: Las Vegas, Heroin, and Heavyweights; Wall Street Journal sportswriter Matthew Futterman, author of Players: The Story of Sports and Money, and the Visionaries Who Fought to Create a Revolution; and Sports Illustrated writer S.L. Price, author of Playing Through the Whistle: Steel, Football, and an American Town.

August 17 Varsity Letters: Tennis Night

Varsity Letters, New York's sports reading series, returns to The Gallery at Le Poisson Rouge with a night devoted to tennis, including a look ahead to the U.S. Open and Serena Williams's quest for an Open-era record 23rd major title. At this event, hosted by Gelf, Caitlin Thompson, co-founder of Racquet Magazine—which is publishing its first issue later this month— and cohost of The Main Draw podcast, will be joined by Racquet contributor Gerald Marzorati, who also writes about tennis for newyorker.com and is the author of Late to the Ball, his tennis memoir; Bart Davis, co-author with Richard Williams of Black and White: The Way I See It; and Varsity Letters alum Tom Perrotta, who writes about tennis for The Wall Street Journal and is not the author of Little Children.

July 12: Olympics Night

Varsity Letters regular Dave Zirin will discuss his book Brazil's Dance with the Devil and what's really going down in Rio. He'll be joined by David Davis, author of Waterman: The Life and Times of Duke Kahanamoku, who'll discuss America's first superstar Olympic Swimmer. Dvora Meyers will read from and discuss her new book, The End of the Perfect 10: The Making and Breaking of Gymnastics' Top Score from Nadia to Now.

June 15: Remembering The Greatest

Gelf returns to The Gallery at Le Poisson Rouge with a night devoted to the legacy of Muhammad Ali and the writing he inspired. Robert Lipsyte, a longtime sportswriter who penned the fighter's New York Times obituary, will discuss what it was like to cover Ali. He'll be joined by Alex Belth, editor of Esquire Classic and curator for Deadspin's The Stacks, who'll read selections from some of the brilliant pieces of sports journalism Ali inspired. Brin-Jonathan Butler, who wrote and directed Ali vs Stevenson: The Greatest Fight That Never Was and authored The Domino Diaries, will speak as well.

May 18: Mina Kimes, Ben Lindbergh, Allison McCann, Oliver Roeder, and Nate Silver

Gelf returns to The Gallery at Le Poisson Rouge with writers from FiveThirtyEight, ESPN's empirical-journalism website. Ben Lindbergh, co-author of the New York Times bestseller The Only Rule Is It Has To Work, will be joined by colleagues Allison McCann, Oliver Roeder, and Nate Silver. Also appearing: ESPN the Magazine writer Mina Kimes.

April 18: Seven Years of Sam Walker's WSJ Sports

Gelf returns to The Gallery at Le Poisson Rouge to pay tribute to the Wall Street Journal's sports coverage, led by editor Sam Walker, who is leaving the section this spring to become the Journal's deputy enterprise editor. Many of the writers and editors who worked with Walker to build the WSJ's distinctive approach to daily sports coverage starting in March 2009—a mix of scoops, humor, investigation, insight, obsessive quantification, deep analysis, the offbeat, and a notable lack of traditional game stories—will be taking the stage with Walker to read from and talk about their favorite WSJ sports work and emails from the boss.
