Resign, Just in Time

Until Friday, David Safavian was head of procurement at the Office of Management and Budget. On Monday, he was indicted, and arrested. So it's interesting to compare the Washington Post and New York Times headlines on him:
Ex-White House Aid Charged in Corruption Case (NYTimes)

Bush Official Arrested in Corruption Probe

Now, I suppose the "ex-" in the Times's headline is technically true; and, sadly, it's easier to forgive a misleading headline than misleading body text.

But, folks, let's compare the openings of the two stories as well:
(Times):

A senior White House budget official who resigned abruptly last week was arrested Monday on charges of lying to investigators and obstructing a federal inquiry involving Jack Abramoff, the Republican lobbyist who has been under scrutiny by the Justice Department for more than a year.

(Post):

The Bush administration's top federal procurement official resigned Friday and was arrested yesterday, accused of lying and obstructing a criminal investigation into Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff's dealings with the federal government.

Two points. The Times makes this guy (and face it, few of us know off the top of our heads what exactly the head of procurement at the Office of Management and Budget does, despite any number of West Wing episodes) sound much less important than the Post does. Secondly, calling him an "ex-official" kind of implies that he has gone on to do something else in the meanwhile, not that he resigned 72 hours before getting arrested.
