January 3: Varsity Letters Reading Series

New York's Varsity Letters sports reading series, the event for erudite sports fans and book lovers, returns on January 3. At this free monthly event at a hip Lower East Side bar, hosted by Gelf's Carl Bialik, three prominent sportswriters will read from their works, talk about them, and take questions.

We have a great program covering compelling figures in sports history: Wellington Mara, Giants owner and NFL visionary; Herb Carnegie, who just missed becoming the Jackie Robinson of professional hockey; and Joe Lapchick, a New York basketball legend as player and coach. Gelf plans to publish interviews with the authors about their books, so check back here to read more about next month's selections.

Admission is FREE. Please spread the word to sports fans and book lovers. Event details below.

This month's authors:

Gus Alfieri, author of Lapchick: The Life of a Legendary Player and Coach in the Glory Days of Basketball [Amazon]

Carlo DeVito, author of Wellington: The Maras, the Giants and the City of New York [Amazon]
