Last month Gelf Magazine kicked off its Non-Motivational Speaker Series in a bar in New York's Lower East Side. Following the lead of Gelf's Varsity Letters event, which has showcased dozens of prominent sportswriters, the Non-Motivational Speaker Series, curated and hosted by Adam Rosen, presents views alternative and overlooked on subjects that define our curiously postmodern life. A different theme will be tackled each month: Comedy, amateur pornography, the anti-organic movement, and blogging are just some of the delectable pieces of brain candy ready to be plucked from the goody bag of topics. Like Varsity Letters, every event will feature three speakers, each invited for his or her unique knowledge and authority.
Culture jammers and pranksters will be this month's topic, on Thursday, April 24. Featured speakers will be Alan Abel, perhaps the most infamous prankster in American prank history, subject of the recent award-winning documentary, Abel Raises Cain, and "founder" of mock citizens' groups The Society for the Indecency to Naked Animals and Citizens Against Breastfeeding; Steve Lambert, guerrilla artist, founder of The Anti-Advertising Agency, and a fellow at cutting-edge arts organization Eyebeam NYC.
The event will start at 8 pm at the Happy Ending Lounge, and is free.
