August 4: Varsity Letters

Gelf's Varsity Letters sports reading series returns on Thursday, August 4, at 7:30 p.m., at Manhattan's Le Poisson Rouge. At this free monthly event, hosted by Gelf, Bill Strickland and Grant Wahl will read from and talk about their work. Strickland chronicled Lance Armstrong's return from retirement to compete in the 2009 Tour de France, and has added to his book in light of recent doping accusations against Armstrong. Wahl will describe his quixotic bid for the presidency of FIFA, the powerful and troubled governing body of world soccer.

July 7: Varsity Letters

Gelf's Varsity Letters sports reading series returns on Thursday, July 7, at 7:30 p.m., at Manhattan's Le Poisson Rouge. At this free monthly event, hosted by Gelf, Steve Friedman, Kostya Kennedy, and Steve Marantz will read from and talk about their newly released sports books. Friedman will read from his memoir of golfing with his dad, and how the sport mirrored their sometimes turbulent relationship. Kennedy will revisit Joe DiMaggio's hitting streak, the mythical record that has withstood 70 years of attempts to break it. And Marantz will recount a true story about high-school basketball, black awakening and rebellion, and innocence lost—all occurring in Omaha while he was a teenager there.

June 9: Varsity Letters

Gelf's Varsity Letters sports reading series returns on Thursday, June 9, at 7:30 p.m., at Manhattan's Le Poisson Rouge. At this free monthly event, hosted by Gelf, James Andrew Miller, co-author of a heavily anticipated oral history of ESPN, will read from and talk about his book. Then he'll be joined in a freewheeling discussion about the book and sports media by ESPN columnist Jemele Hill and Sports Illustrated sports-media writer Richard Deitsch.

June 2: Varsity Letters

Gelf's Varsity Letters sports reading series returns on Thursday, June 2, at 7:30 p.m., at Manhattan's Le Poisson Rouge. At this free monthly event, hosted by Gelf, Alan Hirsch, Robert Lipsyte, and Rob Weintraub will read from and talk about their newly released sports books. Hirsch is coauthor of a book criticizing the moneyball approach to baseball. Veteran writer Lipsyte's memoir recounts his unique career as a sportswriter who wasn't a sports fan. And Weintraub revisits the first year Babe Ruth and the Yankees played in Yankee Stadium.

May 5: Varsity Letters Baseball Night

Gelf's Varsity Letters sports reading series returns on Thursday, May 5, at 7:30 p.m., at Manhattan's Bergino Baseball Clubhouse. At this free monthly event, hosted by Gelf, Harvey Frommer, Jonah Keri, and Lang Whitaker will read from and talk about their work. Frommer will hit the highlights of Fenway Park history, Keri will explain how the Tampa Bay Rays have contended despite a small budget and limited fan base, and Whitaker will trace the interwoven history of his own life and Braves manager Bobby Cox's.

April 7: Varsity Letters Boxing Night

Gelf's Varsity Letters sports reading series returns on Thursday, April 7, at 7:30 p.m., at Manhattan's (Le) Poisson Rouge. At this free monthly event, hosted by Gelf, Thomas Hauser, George Kimball, and Gary Andrew Poole will read from and talk about their work. Veteran boxing writers Hauser and Kimball have new collections out with profiles of some of the ring's most colorful characters. And Poole will discuss his biography of Manny Pacquiao.

March 3: Varsity Letters

Gelf's Varsity Letters sports reading series returns on Thursday, March 3, at 7:30 p.m., at Manhattan's (Le) Poisson Rouge. At this free monthly event, hosted by Gelf, John Eisenberg, Doug Merlino, and Jon Wertheim will read from and talk about their work. Eisenberg will revisit Vince Lombardi's first season in Green Bay, before coach became legend. Merlino will recount his season playing basketball a quarter century ago on a team that was an experiment in racial harmony, and how that season affected the players' lives. And Wertheim will offer up insightful and surprising discoveries about sports analysis and psychology.

February 3: 5th Anniversary Varsity Letters

Gelf's Varsity Letters sports reading series returns on Thursday, February 3, at 7:30 p.m., at Manhattan's Le Poisson Rouge, with a special event ahead of our fifth anniversary. Varsity Letters founder Dan Shanoff—who will be celebrating the launch of his new news site, Quickish— and Gelf—which has been hosting the event since December 2006—will be co-hosting the event. It will feature more than a dozen sportswriters, including Varsity Letters alumni and first-time speakers, who will take the stage in rapid-fire, three-minute installments to recall a defining moment in sports.

January 6: Varsity Letters

Gelf's Varsity Letters sports reading series returns on Thursday, January 6, at 7:30 p.m., with an all-NFL night, just before the playoffs begin. At this free monthly event, hosted by Gelf, N. Jeremi Duru, Anthony L. Gargano, and Chad Millman will read from and talk about their work. Duru will explain how the NFL opened up its hiring process for coaches. Gargano will provide an unvarnished look at life in the league. And Millman will trace the rise of the Steelers, even as Pittsburgh was crumbling around them.

December 2: Varsity Letters

Gelf's Varsity Letters sports reading series returns on Thursday, December 2, at 7:30 p.m. At this monthly event in DUMBO, Brooklyn, hosted by Gelf and Jan Larsen Art, Roger Bennett and Andrew Zimbalist will read from and talk about their work. Bennett will deliver a paean to ping pong, with tales from the table. And Zimbalist will score the winners and losers in sports economics.
