Gelf's Varsity Letters sports reading series returns to New York on August 7 at 8 p.m., for an evening of the Olympics and the NFL. At this free monthly event at a Lower East Side bar, hosted by Gelf, Tom Caraccioli, Stefan Fatsis, and Aaron Schatz will read from and talk about their work, and take questions. Caraccioli will profile athletes whose dreams were lost when the US boycotted the 1980 Olympics, Fatsis will describe his brief-lived adventure as a sportswriter-turned-NFL kicker, and Schatz will offer a tour of the brave new world of football stats.
Gelf's Varsity Letters sports reading series returns to New York on July 3 at 8 p.m., for an evening of baseball. At this free monthly event at a Lower East Side bar, hosted by Gelf, Milton H. Jamail, Deidre Silva, Jackie Koney, and Tim Wendel will read from and talk about their work, and take questions. Jamail will describe the rich pipeline of baseball talent from Venezuela, Silva and Koney will provide a guide to baseball for female fansand all fans, and Wendel will relate stories of Latino ballplayers' varied experiences in the US.

At this free monthly event at a Lower East Side bar, hosted by Gelf, Tom Coyne, Leigh Montville, and David Owen will read from and talk about their work, and take questions. Coyne will relate his quest to make the pro tour; Montville will revive the legend of a forgotten amateur golfing great; and Owen will share from his writing about the ordinary duffer's misadventures.

McKee will recount how his father's death taught him how to live, and to embrace sports; Powell considers the modern black athlete; and Tunison will share writing from his riotous NFL blog.
The baseball writers featured on Gelf's front page will be speaking at a free Gelf event in New York on Thursday, April 3, at 8 p.m. Come by the Happy Ending Lounge to hear Stefan Fatsis, Jonathan Mayo, and Cait Murphy read from and discuss their writing.

Fatsis will sing the praises of his beloved baseball glove, Mayo will describe what it's like to stare down Roger Clemens in the batter's box, and Murphy will recount tales of the nuttiest season in baseball history, one century ago.

Mendlowitz will describe his eight months spent among Ireland's finest amateur athletes, Vrusho will recount some of the most exciting brawls in baseball history, and the Daily News team will recount their investigations into performance-enhancing drugs.

Berkow will recount the life of famed sportswriter Red Smith, Harris will reveal the history of blacks in tennis, and Neugeboren will read from his fictional account of a college-basketball player expelled from the sport he loves because of scandal.
