Henry Wade Rolled Over in His Grave

Gelf previously has taken issue with Metro, one of New York's free daily newspapers aimed at commuters. But it was Metro's generally superior rival, amNewYork, that ran a front-page headline Tuesday on par with the New York Post's Kerry/Gephardt ticket (Smoking Gun). Quoth amNewYork: "The prez vows fed abortion ban will be overturned—many New Yorkers disagree."

Say what? Since when did Bush oppose a federal ban on abortion? Stunned readers who dutifully flip to page 9 will find a story headlined, "Bush vows to overturn Roe v. Wade." (Here's the AP's version.) So clearly the landmark Supreme Court decision on abortion rights instituted a federal ban. In New York newspapers, you get what you pay for—or, in the spirit of amNewYork's double negative, you don't get what you don't pay for.
