Few movies of late have been met with such universally terrible reviews as the Dane Cook/Jessica Alba vehicle Good Luck Chuck. (It's the third-worst among current releases at Metacritic). While an extremely negative review can sometimes bring out a critic's creative side, many of those who reviewed this movie give it as little thought as those who greenlit the film.
While they all find numerous elements to be horrified byan overabundance of exposed breasts, a lack of any real emotion whatsoever, obese women with acne issuesmany of them conclude with a nod to the film's premise. Since every woman who breaks up with Charlie (Dane Cook) ends up finding happiness in her next relationship, the critics have high hopes for the next cinematic experience for themselves, the filmmakers, and Alba's career.
A.O. Scott, New York Times
If the logic of "Good Luck Chuck" holds, the next movie I see should be a masterpiece.
Michael Sragow, Baltimore Sun
Let's hope the Good Luck Chuck charm at least works for Alba's career, and next time out she's in a winner.
Brian Lowry, Variety
Perhaps the most consoling thought for all involved, in fact, would be one adapted from "Chuck's" central premisenamely, better luck with the next movie.
Sue Pierman, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
Alba shines brightly as the beautiful, independent klutz who steals Cook's heart. Maybe fate will see to it that appearing in this movie will guarantee her next role is a winner.
