After watching Indians pitcher Rafael Betancourt take an incredibly long time between pitches in Game 7 of the Indians-Red Sox series, Gelf couldn't help but wonder if that kind of hesitation carried over into his everyday activities. Does he signal three minutes before changing lanes? Can he finish a bowl of soup before it gets cold? Betancourt isn’t the only oddball player out there; Gelf pictures how some of the other quirks of notable players and teams from this year's playoffs might affect them off the field:
Manny Ramirez (who recently celebrated a solo home run with his team down by four runs) exited a Las Vegas casino after losing $35,000 in black jack, $130,000 in craps, and tipping his waitress another $80,000. He then found a crisp $5 bill on the floor and proceeded to dance naked through the Strip singing "La Vida Es Un Carnaval."
Derek Jeter danced with three models at a popular Miami nightclub. One sultry blonde leaned over and whispered in his ear, "You know you're my favorite Yankee, what do you think about that?" Jeter responded, "Well, you know I'm just doing my part for the team, doing what I can to help us win a championship. There are a lot of quality guys on this teamGeorgie, Mo, Alexand I hope they all come back so we can take that next step and win a championship." (OK, this one might be true.)
The New York Mets cleaned out their lockers with a palpable sense of gloom. Carlos Beltran drove himself home and caused a 12-car pile-up on the Jackie Robinson Parkway. Carlos Delgado invested his signing bonus in the stock market, and the Dow fell 500 points. David Wright was walking home from the clubhouse with a squiggly black cloud above his head, when a car drove through a muddy puddle and splashed his brand new pants, prompting him to moan to no one in particular, "good grief."
