Movie studios, take note: New legislation in Europe will ban the practice of extracting words and phrases from theater reviews, quoting them misleadingly, and stamping them on advertisements and billboards (Independent). At Gelf, we call this advertising practice the Blurb Racket, and run a regular column about its implementation in movie ads.
If the US ever instituted a similar law for films, this ad for the film Hoax (spotlighted in the latest The Blurbs column) might be in hot water:
Bob Strauss, Los Angeles Daily News: " 'The Hoax' is the smartest movie of the year."
Actual line: "Maybe I've been scammed. I don't think so, but if I have, at least I was fooled by experts into thinking that 'The Hoax' is the smartest movie of the year by experts."
